First ODI: Pakistan defeats Sri Lanka by 4 wickets with one ball to spare

Summary Sohaib Maqsood played a brilliant knock, supported by Fawad Alam, to reach the target of 276 runs

HAMBANTOTA (Web Desk) – Pakistan has defeated Sri Lanka in the first One Day International (ODI) after a nail-biting contest in Hambantota. Sohaib Maqsood played a brilliant knock of 89 runs to achieve this target. Fawad Alam also played a superb innings to help the Green Shirts achieve the mammoth total.

Shahid Afridi played the winning-stroke off Kulasekara s ball. Fawad Alam scored 62 off 61 balls but was dismissed just when he was about to win the game for the national team along with Sohaib Maqsood. Shahid Afridi joined Sohaib Maqsood after Fawad s departure and scored 14 runs off 10 balls to help Pakistan cross the winning-line.

Earlier, Skipper Misbahul Haq was fifth batsman sent back to the pavilion who scored 13 runs for 22 balls. He was caught behind by wicket-keeper Sangakara on Rangana Herath s delivery. 

Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad started as firm openers but could not manage to stay on the pitch for long and Muhammad Hafeez got LBW by Angelo Mathews at 21 runs. Younis Khan headed back to the pavilion adding 3 runs to the total score. Umer Akmal was able to score15 runs when he got caught on Thisara Perrera s ball.
