ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) — Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan on Wednesday inaugurated the new headquarters of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) in Islamabad, reaffirming the government's commitment to supporting Pakistan's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Haroon Akhtar Khan said the establishment of SMEDA's headquarters in Islamabad had been completed for the first time on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
He said the government had assigned the authority new objectives and responsibilities in line with the prime minister's vision to improve support for small, medium and home-based businesses across the country.
The ceremony was attended by Secretary of the Ministry of Industries and Production Saif Anjum, SMEDA Chief Executive Officer Nadia J. Seth, and members of the authority's board.
Haroon Akhtar described SMEs as the backbone of Pakistan's economy and said the government was taking practical measures to promote their growth and competitiveness.
He said efforts were under way to create a more business-friendly environment by improving access to modern technology, training programmes and financial facilities. These initiatives, he added, would help attract investment, increase domestic production and boost exports.
The special assistant also highlighted the government's focus on encouraging young entrepreneurs and women-led businesses, saying the development of the SME sector would generate employment opportunities, support industrial growth and contribute to sustainable economic stability.
Haroon Akhtar said the government remained committed to strengthening SMEDA so that entrepreneurs across Pakistan could access improved business services under one roof, adding that a strong SME sector was essential for a stronger national economy.
