Summary Punjab has approved purchase of 1 million metric tonnes of wheat from PASSCO to stabilise flour prices and ensure food security while managing provincial wheat stocks.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Punjab government has decided to purchase one million metric tonnes of wheat from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) to stabilize wheat and flour prices in the province.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved the decision aimed at ensuring price stability in the wheat and flour market and providing affordable flour and bread to the public. Under the plan, flour mills will be supplied wheat at Rs3,300 per maund.

The provincial government stated that claims regarding restrictions on wheat supply from Sindh to other provinces via Punjab are not based on verified facts, adding that no formal complaints have been reported about wheat supply being stopped from Sindh to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Officials said wheat stock declaration processes are ongoing, and complete data compilation is in progress. They also noted that the current wheat crop has comparatively smaller grain size, making stock assessment essential for food security planning.

The government further said that after meeting Punjab’s own food requirements, it will ensure wheat supply to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as part of its inter-provincial responsibility.
