Summary Unscheduled electricity load shedding has crippled the industry in southern Punjab.

Unemployment threat is looming over thousands of factory workers in southern Punjab as factory owners are unable to meet the cost of production. The power looms owners said that the load shedding paralyzed the industry and it was not possible for them to run a single shift in a day and were unable to accomplish their orders. The exports have also been affected by the load shedding.According to the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) official, electricity short fall has soared to 575 megawatts. In Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Muzaffargarh 12 to 14 hours load shedding has been done, whereas the situation is worse in the rural areas as villages are getting electricity for only four to eight hours a day.
